History

Background History

The Asia Summer Program (ASP) was initiated by the visionary leaders of its five founding universities: Bangkok University, Dongseo University, Josai University, Petra Christian University, and Universiti Malaysia Perlis. Driven by a shared commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of Asia’s diversity and regional challenges, these institutions recognised the need for higher education to play an active role in preparing future leaders.

The founding members agreed that meaningful cultural exchange and specially curated courses would be the most effective way to cultivate awareness of Asia’s rich diversity and shared issues. With this mission, the Asia Summer Program was established as a platform for students to gain first-hand experience of foreign cultures while engaging in interdisciplinary academic studies.

In 2013, ASP strengthened its impact by affiliating with the Asian University Presidents Forum (AUPF), an organisation headquartered at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. This partnership enabled ASP to expand its network, welcoming students and faculty from an even broader range of universities and countries.

ASP continues to build on its legacy, fostering multicultural collaboration and creating unforgettable learning experiences. ASP has been hosted in a different country every year since its establishment. In 2025, Petra Christian University will proudly host ASP for the third time.
